About the image...
From the 2007 exhibition - Above & Beyond the Australian Landscape (background information).
Just an ordinary sky, no brilliant colours, just grey sky, clouds and soft light … such a sight might have gone unnoticed, but it was the very ‘ordinariness’ of the view that demanded greater attention.
As with most photographs taken through the window of the plane the image was grey and lifeless, then colour was added and the beauty and majesty of the sun setting above the ocean was fully revealed. The original image has been reproduced several times, using a range of colours – each one revealing a totally different landscape, each no more than a colour enhanced interpretation of that which is there for everyone to enjoy on a daily basis … I went out and bought a collection of coloured lens sunglasses which I now take with me everywhere I go, just in case I make the mistake of thinking its just another grey and lifeless day…
As the colours developed within this image I became aware of an ethereal volcano that hadn't been noticed before ... the strange thing is the original photographs had been taken looking toward the present day Mount Warning, Northern NSW ... the volcano that appears in the image seems to ge a ghostly reminder of what the original shield volcano might have been like a few million years ago... (more) I love creating images, it takes me to all sorts of places in my imagination.
